Seller hub
Sell your Tesla with fewer surprises.
Prep the car, price against reality (not wishful comps), choose private vs trade-in honestly, and keep meetings and paperwork safe.
Prep that actually moves the needle
- Detail: Clean cabin, frunk, trunk, wheels. Buyers notice dog hair and charge-cable chaos.
- Fix cheap annoyances: Cabin filter, wiper blades, missing aero covers, dead 12V symptoms — get Service history exported if you have it.
- Photos: Daylight, all corners, odometer, Autopilot computer screen (Software), charge port, underbody if clean, any imperfections (honesty sells faster).
- Charge to ~60–80%: For showings; full charge isn’t required and can slow scheduling.
- Factory reset timing: Only after the sale completes and you’ve removed the car from your Tesla account — not before the buyer’s test drive.
Pricing reality
Don’t invent a number from a single optimistic listing. Cross-check:
- Recent sold or pending comps on major marketplaces (not just asking prices).
- Tesla’s own used inventory for similar year/miles/options (a floor/ceiling signal).
- Trade-in quotes from Tesla and 1–2 other channels — useful even if you go private.
This site does not publish listing prices. Verify live comps yourself.
Private party vs trade-in
Private party
Usually higher net — more work, more flaky tire-kickers, more fraud risk. You handle showings, payment, and title.
Trade-in / instant offers
Lower number, less hassle. Good when time, safety, or overlapping a new purchase matters more than max dollars.
Hybrid approach many sellers use: get trade-in quotes first (know your floor), then list private with a firm-but-fair ask.
Meeting buyers safely
- Daytime public places (busy parking lots, police station “safe exchange” lots where available).
- Bring a friend. Tell someone your plan and timing.
- Test drives: you drive first or ride along; verify buyer’s license; don’t leave title or spare keys in the car.
- Decline pressure to “hold” with a weird deposit method. Legitimate buyers can meet your payment process.
- Watch for overpayment scams, fake cashier’s checks, and “shipper will pick up” stories.
Paperwork basics
- Know your state’s title signing, odometer disclosure, and release-of-liability rules before the meeting. CA sellers: file release of liability promptly after sale (dmv.ca.gov).
- Bill of sale with VIN, price, date, odometer, names/addresses as required.
- Payoff letters if there’s a lien — coordinate with your lender; don’t hand a wet title story without a plan.
- Remove the vehicle from your Tesla account after ownership transfer steps Tesla documents for your region.
- Cancel or transfer insurance once the buyer’s coverage is confirmed effective.
FSD / Autopilot — seller notes
- Be honest in the ad: purchased FSD vs subscription vs none. Buyers will verify.
- Transfer eligibility is governed by Tesla’s current policy — you cannot promise a transfer that Tesla won’t allow.
- Don’t accept a price premium for “FSD included” unless you’ve confirmed transferability for that VIN/account with Tesla.
- After sale, remove driver profiles and unpair phones; complete Tesla’s ownership transfer / remove vehicle steps.
